Abstract

Dispersion equation for Love waves in a fluid-saturated porous isotropic layer over a semi-infinite non homogeneous elastic medium with half-space rectangular irregularity was derived by perturbation technique and Fourier transformation. Analysis of the dispersion equation indicated that the phase velocity was strongly correlated with wave number, depth of the irregularity and inhomogeneity parameter. The variations of dimensionless phase velocity with dimensionless wave number were plotted for different sizes of rectangular irregularities and inhomogeneity parameter using Matlab graphical routines; and the phase velocity increased with wave number and inhomogeneity parameter. Due to the effect of irregularity at the interface, the phase velocity of Love waves in the fluid saturated porous isotropic layer over homogeneous elastic half space increased at slightly faster rate than the phase velocity of Love waves in the fluid saturated porous isotropic layer over non-homogeneous elastic half space for the ratio of rectangular depth to isotropic layer thickness; while the phase velocity decreased with increase in the value of the inhomogeneity parameter
